Review: Little Italy Pizza

Little Italy Pizza

As I pushed open the door into Little Italy Pizza in Downtown Beverly, I was shocked to see how small the place was. “This place,” I said disbelievingly to my friend, “has the best pizza in town?” In the era of pizza joints like The Upper Crust and Flatbread Pizza Co., I admittedly had started to equate quality of pizza with style and price.

Their pizza is made fresh once you order it, and at $10 for a large cheese and less than $15 for any of their specialty pizzas, it is quite a value. Since they make the pizza fresh, you always do have to wait a little while, but it’s not a problem: They serve pitchers of beer.

When the pizza comes to the table it is always extremely hot and carries with it a fragrant smell of rich sauce and bold cheese. The layers of cheese are thick, and the crust looks doughy and rich rather than flat and bland. I was shocked to see many of my experienced companions actually eating the large slices with a fork and knife.

The first bite of the cheese pizza was the one that sold me.The sauce has a unique sweet quality to it that plays off the boldness of the cheese, making it far more exciting and satisfying than the average cheese pizza. The crust is excellent as well, with its soft texture and slightly floury taste really tying the whole symphony of flavor together. It is this pizza that has kept me returning to Little Italy frequently ever since.

Even though they recreate the classic cheese pizza so well, it’s still worth venturing on through the menu. The pepperoni they use is fresh and delicious, filling your mouth with flavor and contrasting well with the sweetness of the tomato sauce. The barbecue chicken is no dissapointment either; the chicken is moist and flavorful and the sauce has a nice kick to it.

Overall, everything I’ve had here has been fresh, full flavored and unique. I continue to be impressed by the quality of the food given the casual atmosphere, laid back young servers, and the low prices. Little Italy Pizza is truly a treasure, and anyone in the area owes it to themselves to make a visit.
